Brown Sugar, Durham
![]() |
Brown Sugar is very brown and very sweet. This is what it feels like to be inside in a box of chocolates; just don't eat the chairs. |
Talking of chairs, the best are the giant caramel-coloured leather ones.

Brown Sugar has been designed with precision and is fairly swish, with a plush interior and plasma TV screens. So it is not (I presume) the brainchild of an independent café owner, but it doesn't lack character.
It's a great place to sip a coffee in peace, harmony, and a temperate climate (thanks to the air conditioning). It doubles up as a student bar in the evenings.

With lovely Durham just beyond the huge glass windows, what more could you want?

New Elvet,
Durham.

Welcome to Cosy Coffee Shops, a blog dedicated to seeking out terrific independent coffee houses. Some are particularly comfy and relaxing, some serve outstanding coffee, some have both. Most serve drinks that are ethically sourced (for example, Fairtrade). We've visited everywhere at least once. Read more about this blog...

Very nice looking, stylish and cosy.
Coffee, Cocktails and service are absolutly awful. to the point its amusing.
if youre laidback, in no hurry and dont care about paying the usual price for unusually bad Brown Sugar is good.
Definitely very cosy, but the service is often ice-age inducingly slow!
I can really feel your love for coffee and newspapers and peace. I share it completely. I really am missing England very much right now!!
