Coffee Culture, York
![]() |
![]() A terrific coffee house hidden away in historic York. |
Not unusually for this city, Coffee Culture is squeezed snugly into a tall, thin, rickety building. There are three stories connected by steep staircases. A visit above ground level is not for the faint of heart.
There are a few small tables on the first floor and, at the far end, a window ledge with comfy cushions and a view over bustling Goodramgate. Of all the spots in all the coffee houses in all the world, this is perhaps my favourite.

Up to the second floor to find a smashing sofa and a couple more tables for nattering over a steamy drink.
There is a good selection of coffees, which are top of the menu and all very good. It's waiter service so just find a seat (someone will appear promptly to take your order). The staff are friendly and chatty, despite spending their days walking up and down those stairs.
It's perfectly decorated and all very unpretentious, What's more, I like the bakground music (I seem to remember Beatles, Bowie and Smiths) and, if you're hungry as well as thirsty, the food is good.
This is one of my favourites and I'll be back (frequently)..

A great coffee shop. Went in during it's first week of opening in my second year at York Uni and loved it ever since. A great cup of coffee, the best bacon roll in York and usually Radio 2 on the speakers. Plus great guys run it!
