La Place Verte, York

La Place Verte, York La Place Verte is a Belgian coffee house. It's a super place and a little bit different from the other cafés in York.

It's ingeniously squeezed into cubby hole in Skeldergate Bridge. Unless the weather is bad, take advantage of the riverside location and pick a seat outside. This is one of the nicest spots in town for a bit of café culture.

The coffee is terrific, though not for those looking for a cappuccino, latte etc. The "Belgian coffee", which comes with a choice of three chocolates, is particularly indulgent (so good it impressed my tea-obsessed companion!). The hot chocolate is superb; it arrives as a glass of hot milk with separate chunks of Belgian chocolate to be added at your leisure.

Though this blog is not about food, I have to say I recommend grabbing a bite. The Belgian waffles and pancakes are delicious, and everything comes well presented and is served by friendly staff. It may be a little pricier than the average café, but it's great value.

La Place Verte often stays open late in the summer and, quite rightly, is becomming increasingly popular.

Not one for your typical coffee purist but I'm not really one of those, and I love it.

Lyndsey :

You have to try the hot chocolate! It is amazing - a glass of warm milk, a small bowl of belgian chocolate to stir in and a bowl of whipped cream to put on top! Like nothing else!

Clara :

I went here!
The ice cream and cherry waffle with cream was amazing. I recommend
it highly.

Most serve drinks that are ethically sourced (for example, Fairtrade). We've visited everywhere at least once. Read more about this blog...
