Twenty Two A, Sheffield

In the middle of Sheffield city centre is Twenty Two A, a quaint, independent coffee shop.

The name is worryingly unimaginative; it's just the building number.

The rest of 22A is inspired. I'm thinking particularly of plants growing out of colourful children's wellies and DIY hot chocolate with chunky chocolate bits to mix with hot, frothy milk.

The hot chocolate is really good and, in a welcome departure from the norm, there are lots of unusual options. The same goes for the coffee.

The owners seem to have taken a great deal of time preparing their hot drinks menu, which, as a result, makes for an interesting read.  Coffee fans will feel at home here.

Nevertheless, if you're hungry as well, there's a good choice of food, with (again) some interesting ideas (for example, ingenious sandwich combinations concocted by 22a employees). And it tastes really good.

There are tables outside and in. The walls are plain and uninteresting, but there's a pleasant farmhouse feel thanks to the chunky wooden tables and chairs.

There's an order at the counter, drinks come to your table arrangement. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and chatty and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

22a has the feel of a well-established, easy-going coffee shop.  It's thororoughly charming.

Welcome to Cosy Coffee Shops, a blog dedicated to seeking out terrific independent coffee houses. Some are particularly comfy and relaxing, some serve outstanding coffee, some have both. Most serve drinks that are ethically sourced (for example, Fairtrade). We've visited everywhere at least once. Read more about this blog...
