Pilgrims Coffee House, Holy Island

30 September 2012

So good it gets its own postcard, Pilgrims is a surprisingly decent coffee spot on the unique Holy Island.

Holy Island, aka Lindisfarne, is a pint-sized, picture-perfect island off the magical Northumberland coast, cut off from civilisation for much of the day (don’t get stuck half way).

Pilgrims – recommended by Cosy Coffee Shops readers – is the second coffee shop on the island to merit a place on Cosy Coffee Shops. The Stables was the first.

Pilgrims is the better. The coffee is decent, with a touch of latte art thrown in for good measure. It’s no artisan coffee shop, but the staff are enthusiastic and they make a good brew.

It has avoided becoming a generic tourist trap relying on footfall. There are comfy spaces inside and space outside in the gorgeous courtyard. The smashing surroundings and friendly service wouldn’t be out of place in a big English city.

As it is, it’s here on Holy Island, and there’s nowhere better for a break before walking over to that famous castle.

Pilgrims is not what it was. Paper cups and plates have replaced real crockery and prices have gone up. Cappuccino not as strong as it was

They use the paper cups and plates to be as green as possible; they have been in use for a while now. And prices have gone up everywhere!
