Best coffee shops in York

York is famed for its heritage, tourists and tea-rooms. Scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find a booming speciality coffee scene. A coffee trawl is a great way to get to know the city, with terrific shots to be found in an ancient 14th Century tower and a 16th Century gatehouse, among other places. Here are our favourites.

The Perky Peacock

Our favourite York coffee shop is a luscious combo of historic setting and award-winning coffee. Owner Nicola Peacock and barista Gabby have enjoyed success at recent UK Barista Championships and UK Latte Art Championships respectively. A second branch on Gillygate has a different feel but the quality is just as high. Disclaimer – Mrs Cosy used to work here! Read our full review.
Lendal Bridge, York, YO1 6HU. Open Mon to Fri 7am – 4pm and Sat 10am – 4pm. Also 74 Gillygate, York. Open Mon to Fri 8am – 5pm and Sat 9 – 4pm.

Stanley Ramona York - small featured

Stanley & Ramona

Named after a mis-hearing of ‘standing room only’, Stanley & Ramona may be small but it’s one of our top York coffee haunts. Lovely people, really good coffee. Read our full review.
30A Bishopthorpe Rd, York YO23 1JJ. Open Mon to Wed 8am – 4pm, Thurs & Fri 8am – 5pm and Sun 9am – 5pm.

Spring Espresso York

Spring Espresso

Consistently excellent coffee. On Fossgate, not far from York’s famous old street The Shambles, Spring may lack a bit of atmosphere but it’s always busy, a testament to the quality drinks, food and service. Read our full review45 Fossgate, York, YO1 9TF. Open Mon to Fri, 8am to 7pm, and Sat & Sun, 9am – 5pm.

Harlequin, York

Harlequin and The Attic

Not far from Spring is Harlequin and, one floor up, The Attic, both overseen by Gordon Howell. On their day, both places serve excellent coffee. Read our full review.
2 Kings Square, City Centre, York YO1 8BH. Open Mon to Sat 10 – 4, Sun 11 – 5.
The Attic, also at 2 Kings Sq. Open Thurs 12 – 6, Sat & Sun 12 – 8.

Gatehouse Coffee, York

Gatehouse Coffee

An intriguing place in an ancient gate (which we York residents know locally as a ‘bar’) in the city walls. Plucked straight from a Harry Potter novel. The coffee is ok – just don’t get these evangelical Christians started about angels. Read our full review.
Walmgate Bar, York, YO10 2UB. Open Mon to Wed 10 – 6, Thu 10 – 8. Fri & Sat 10 – 6.

The best of the rest

Brew & Brownie

Very popular. Very good coffee, excellent food, stylish decor, friendly service. Go for breakfast! Highly recommended. Full review coming soon / not yet on the map (below).
5 Museum St, York, YO1 7DT.

Coffee Culture

The coffee can’t match the others, but you couldn’t wish for a friendlier place or a better full English breakfast. The rickety stairs and comfy chairs are pure York. Read our full review.
41 Goodramgate, York, YO1 7LS.

Your Bike Shed

A new place with disappointing coffee but fabulous decor and setting. Well worth a visit. Full review coming soon / not yet on the map (below).
148 Micklegate, York, YO1 6JX.

Each to their own, but I’d like to dispute that Coffee Culture doesn’t have great coffee! They always have a range of specialty and house beans in, and I’ve never been disappointed. It’s also well priced. Maybe you should try again with a different bean? It’s cosy and the staff are lovely. Perfect spot for people watching. I’ve lived here 5 years and it’s my favourite coffee place by far 🙂 glad it was on the list, though
